01 / WHO WE ARE
About
Getty Lab

lab-getty.com is not a stock agency. It is a working laboratory where chemists, archivists and photographers rescue visual memory — from shoebox negatives to Hollywood reels.

Laboratory chemistry for film Film rolls archive Microscope color research
2016 — Founded in a garage darkroom with one Jobo processor and a second-hand Hasselblad.
2019 — Opened archival wing: freeze-drying for water-damaged negatives, ultrasonic cleaning.
2023 — Launched Color Science unit: custom profiles for Kodak, Ilford, Cinestill + 14K Shoreline scanner.
2025 — 2.1M frames restored for museums, families and studios. Zero landfill chemistry — 100% silver recovery.

We treat every frame like evidence of life.

Our team of 18 includes photo chemists, paper conservators, drum-scan operators and machine-learning engineers. We combine analog craft with computational imaging: grain-aware denoising, dye-fade inversion, tear and mold reconstruction.

LAB TIP: Never throw “black” negatives.

80% of “blank” film holds image in dense highlights. Our HDR scan recovers 6 extra stops.

Do you develop expired or found film?

Yes — 70% of our work is expired. We do clip-tests, adjust time for fog, and use benzotriazole restrainers. Even 40-year-old film often yields haunting, beautiful images.

How do I mail my negatives safely?

Use a rigid box, sleeve each strip, add “DO NOT X-RAY / DO NOT BEND”. We email a prepaid tracked label and insure up to $1000 automatically.

What resolution is 14K really?

Around 14000×10000 px from 35mm — ~140 MP with true grain resolution. Files are ~450MB TIFF 16-bit. Perfect for 60-inch prints.

Can you restore photos without negatives?

Absolutely. We scan prints at 2400 dpi, rebuild missing areas, rebalance faded dyes, and reprint on archival paper indistinguishable from original.
